The Tamu Safaris Experience

Katherine Muir wanted to go on a wildlife safari to Africa and was about to sign up with a well-known tour company when she decided to call Tamu Safaris on a word-of-mouth recommendation. With that single phone call, she decided to switch over to Tamu Safaris. Two months later, she was in Kenya, a single mother with three children, counting elephants at the edge of the alkaline plains in Amboseli National Park. There were 113 animals in total, one of the largest remaining elephant herds in East Africa.

Before Amboseli, Mrs. Muir spent several nights in Masai Mara's little known Sekenani Valley, a place teeming with wildlife. Following Amboseli, she spent four days relaxing amid palm trees and the crystal clear waters of the Indian Ocean on Lamu Island, just a stone's throw off the coast of Kenya. On Lamu, the Muir family stayed in a private 800-year-old Swahili house recently declared one of Kenya's national historical monuments. From its whitewashed rooftop veranda, Mrs. Muir and her children took in the quiet sounds of Lamu town, Kenya's oldest living settlement. For a busy New Yorker from Manhattan, the absence of cars and crowds on Lamu Island provided a perfect holiday experience.

Like Katherine Muir, many travelers come to Tamu Safaris when they are trying to decide what kind of Africa safari to go on. When a client calls, we engage them in a friendly conversation about why they want to go on a safari to Africa, what they are interested in, what they like to do when they travel, favorite hobbies, etc. Then a personalized safari itinerary is developed that comes as close as possible to reflecting their special interests. A customized trip can offer the best of both worlds - while out on safari, you can decide how long you want to spend with the animals. Perhaps you've come upon a herd of elephant bathing in a river, and want to watch them for the afternoon. When it's your own customized trip, you can. And at the end of the day, you return to carefully selected accommodations, where you can share the highlights of your day with other travelers. Being small allows us to cater to personal interests when it comes to educational and adventure travel. It also enables us to set our own goals and priorities as a quality ecotourism operator. And although Tamu Safaris is small, our clients come from all walks of life: librarians, school teachers, social workers, zoo specialists, honeymooners, families with children, have all enjoyed a Tamu Safaris trip to Africa.

Founded in 1987 by Costas and Sally Christ, Tamu Safaris is a family-run business born out of more than a decade of living in Africa and firsthand experience in leading wildlife and cultural expeditions throughout the continent. Our founding principle - to provide small, specialized educational travel of the highest quality - and core philosophy - a desire to promote natural history exploration and cross-cultural understanding - are mutually supportive. All participants, in groups no larger than 16, are carefully briefed prior to each trip on the customs and cultures of local peoples and on the ecotourism standards upheld by Tamu Safaris. We also promote the direct employment of indigenous African peoples in the travel industry and supports grassroots conservation projects, such as the Lamu Town Conservation Society in Kenya.
