There is still a place in France that isn't overrun with tourists. It's a place hidden away in france profond -- a phrase the French use to describe "the deepest France." It's the Aveyron and it's one of the few undiscovered areas of France.
The Aveyron is France's heartland -- a place where the love of food is the soul of the culture. It's a place where everything is closer to the source, a simple reflection of the values and traditions of family farms and small villages. And it's where you'll find the quiet elegance of Chateau St. Saturnin.
The Chateau was built in the 1790s by a local Viscount, was redone in the 1920s by a Parisian restaurateur (originally from the Aveyron) , and was completely restored and redecorated as a private chateau-hotel that opened for business in 1993.
We have six guest rooms and two suites, each with private bath. The rooms are individually decorated and beautifully appointed. They have comfortable beds, large windows, and most have marble fireplaces. The bathrooms are luxurious with thick cotton towels and robes, oversized tubs, and lots of tile. (We also have a two-bedroom self-contained apartment with a small kitchen for guests interested in doing their own cooking.)
The Chateau sits on a two-acre estate in the center of
St. Saturnin de Lenne, an ancient farming village where the sheep
far outnumber the people. We have a beautiful pool, a formal garden, a kitchen
garden, and large expanses of lawn to enjoy.
Just beyond the gates of the Chateau are many miles of trails and country roads begging to be explored on foot or on one of the many bicycles we keep at the Chateau. We have some wonderful guided and self-guided bike rides and walks that we can arrange for you.
And only short drives away are the Medieval treasures of Conques, the spectacular gorges of the Tarn and Jonte rivers, the ancient, fortified Cathar villages and farms, the beautiful Lot river valley, and the cheese caves of Roquefort.
You'll find us listed in the current editions of the Gault Millau Guide to France, Fodor's Hotels & Country Inns of Character and Charm in France, Alastair Sawday's Guide to French Bed & Breakfast, and the Good Hotel Guide.
Most of our guests are looking for three things when
they stay with us: they want to relax in a comfortable place, they want to
enjoy some great food and wine, and they want to do something a little out
of the ordinary. And we are happy to report that our guests are rarely
disappointed.
We do have some special opportunities that you should
consider if you are planning a trip to France. If you love food you should
come
for one of our 7-day Adventures for Food Lovers featuring cooking demonstrations
and lessons, visits to country markets and farms, gastronomic meals in the
grandest tradition of the Aveyron. We also offer a painting and drawing course
with Stanley Woolston, a well-known English landscape artist. And there is
plenty of opportunity for those of you who enjoy "active relaxation,"
including golf, fishing, hiking, and horseback riding.
Getting to Chateau St. Saturnin
There are a number of ways to reach the Chateau. The
most popular is to take the TAT flight (booked through British Airways) from
Paris-Orly to Rodez. From Rodez, it's only a 35 minute drive to the Chateau.
You can also drive from Paris in about 5 hours.
